Relau Rumah Charis

Our Mission and Purpose The mission of Relau Rumah Charis is to serve society with love and to be a blessing to everyone in the community. Our service is guided by the teachings of the Bible: to love others as ourselves, to love our neighbours as ourselves, and to remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Inspired by God’s love and moved by His compassion, the founder, Reverend Teo How Ken, devoted his life to serving vulnerable members of society. With a heart of care, mercy, and service, he sought to bring love and compassion to those in need through practical acts of kindness. Relau Rumah Charis provides free accommodation for elderly people aged 60 and above who are living in poverty and have no family support. Regardless of their religious beliefs or gender, they are welcomed into a safe, comfortable, and caring environment where they receive long-term care and support, enabling them to enjoy their later years in peace and dignity. Through our continued care and service, we hope that every elderly resident will experience respect, warmth, and love, and be able to live in a safe and dignified environment. Our heartfelt desire is for every elderly person to experience love and for every life in need to receive care and compassion.   Our Services Relau Rumah Charis upholds the principle of loving others as ourselves. Regardless of religious beliefs or gender, we care for elderly people aged 60 and above who are living in poverty, have no family support, or require care because their children are unable to provide for them. Elderly individuals who are able to manage their daily activities independently and meet the home’s admission criteria are welcome to receive our care and support. Guided by the spirit of love and compassion, we are committed to caring for every resident wholeheartedly. We focus not only on their daily living needs but also on their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Through attentive care, patient companionship, and ongoing support, we hope to create a homely atmosphere where every resident feels loved, valued, and respected, especially during the later stages of life. To improve the quality of care, we also seek guidance and assistance from relevant professionals. According to the needs of our residents, appropriate services may include social work support, counseling, nutritional advice, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation exercises. These services aim to help residents maintain their physical and emotional well-being and improve their overall quality of life. In addition, the home organists recreational activities and entertainment programmed several times a year. These activities provide opportunities for residents to relax, interact with others, strengthen friendships, and enjoy a more meaningful and fulfilling daily life. Through comprehensive care, professional support, and compassionate companionship, we hope to provide every resident with a safe and welcoming environment where they can enjoy their later years with dignity, comfort, and a better quality of life.   Our Goals Relau Rumah Charis upholds the spirit of love and compassion, serving the community with humility, simplicity, and trust in God. Guided by the teachings of the Bible, we seek to serve others through practical acts of kindness and to share God’s love with those in need. We are committed to caring for and serving the elderly by providing not only for their daily physical needs but also offering attentive care, patient companionship, and respect. Through love and compassion, we hope every resident will experience warmth, care, and dignity. As society continues to develop and the needs of elderly care change, we recognize the importance of continuous learning, growth, and improvement. Therefore, we strive to enhance our facilities, care giving practices, and service standards. We also arrange regular in-service training, professional development programmed, and relevant seminars for our staff to strengthen their knowledge, skills, and ability to provide quality care. Through continuous learning, improvement, and self-development, we aim to provide more comprehensive and better-quality care for the elderly. Our vision is for Relau Rumah Charis to become a home filled with love, compassion, and hope, where every resident can live in peace, feel safe and cared for, and enjoy their later years with dignity.

A Brief History of Relau Rumah Charis, Penang

From Barren Land to a Home Built on Love

The founder of Rumah Charis, Reverend Teo How Ken, became a full-time social worker in 1984. He subsequently established a home for the elderly and a children's home in Puchong, Kuala Lumpur, dedicating himself to serving vulnerable members of society.

In 1995, Ms. Wong Siew Ling, a devout Christian and the landowner of Rumah Charis, generously offered the use of a piece of undeveloped land measuring 3.8887 acres in Relau, Penang, without charge, so that Reverend Teo could establish a home for the elderly.

Reverend Teo accepted Ms. Wong's request and responsibility. On 2 March 1996, he arrived in Relau, Penang, with his wife and children. It was an unfamiliar place, and he faced the challenging task of building the ministry from the ground up.

During the early years, the home frequently faced financial difficulties. At one point, Reverend Teo even considered giving up. However, he remained faithful to his original vision and continued working hard alongside a team of staff members who had come from Kuala Lumpur.

After approximately two years of hard work, the construction of the container cabins was finally completed. What had once been undeveloped land gradually became a home for the elderly with 30 beds, five shower rooms, six toilets, an office, and a room serving as both a library and a reception area.

Gratitude for the Support of the Community

Since its establishment, Rumah Charis has relied on donations and fundraising efforts to support its daily operations and provide care for the elderly. The home has also built meaningful relationships with charitable organizations, community groups, businesses, and caring individuals who share its commitment to serving those in need.

We sincerely thank everyone who has cared for, supported, and contributed to Rumah Charis. Your kindness and generosity have enabled us to overcome many years of challenges and continue providing care for elderly people who need a safe place to call home.

With the support of the community, the home's facilities and services have gradually improved, enhancing the residents' quality of life. We believe that every elderly person deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and dignity.

Preparing for Future Development

Due to the geographical conditions of the original site, including its low-lying location near a river, and the increasing development of nearby apartment buildings, Rumah Charis has experienced several severe floods. These floods caused damage to furniture, belongings, and other facilities.

To support the home's long-term development, Rumah Charis purchased a piece of land in the Pulau Betong area of Balik Pulau, Penang, in 2007. The land was acquired for future development, with the hope of building a more suitable home for the elderly on land owned by the organization.

Through this future development, Rumah Charis hopes to provide a safer and more comfortable living environment for elderly residents while further improving the quality of its care services.
